The following is a list of well-known (to Londoners) examples of Cockney rhyming slang. It is not intended to be comprehensive.



Many terms are based on popular culture, and so the cant is constantly updated according to changing fashions. The terms listed here are well-established.

  • Adam and Eve — believe
  • apples and pears — stairs
  • aris — short for Aristotle = "bottle"; short for bottle and glass = "arse"
  • Barclays Bank, J. Arthur Rank, Jodrell Bank, Tommy Tank — wank
  • Barnet - short for Barnet Fair = "hair"
  • bees and honey — money
  • berk — short for Berkeley Hunt = "cunt"
  • bird — short for bird lime = time (in prison)
  • boracic — short for boracic lint = "skint"
  • Brahms and Liszt — pissed (drunk)
  • bristol — usually plural; short for Bristol City (the football team) = "titty" (breast)
  • butcher's, butcher's hook — a look
  • china — short for china plate = "mate" (friend)
  • cobblers — short for cobbler's awls = "balls" (nonsense)
  • currant bun — The Sun (the British newspaper)
  • dog and bone — phone
  • frog and toad — road
  • ginger, ginger beer — queer (homosexual [adjective])
  • Gypsy's kiss — piss
  • half-inch — pinch (to steal)
  • iron, iron hoof — poof (a homosexual)
  • jam-jar — car
  • Jimmy, Jimmy Riddle — piddle
  • joanna — piano
  • khyber — short for Khyber Pass = "arse"
  • mince pie — eye
  • mutt, Mutt and Jeff — deaf
  • nelly — short for Nelly Duff = "puff" = "life"; used in the phrase "not on your nelly!"

  • pen and ink — stink (noun)
