LESSON 6

MODULE A – Dialogue Section I

I'M SORRY I FORGOT

Harry: It was my birthday yesterday. But you forgot all about it.
Brenda: I’m sorry. Anyway, many happy returns of the day.
Harry: Thank you. Better late than never.
Brenda: I’m sorry I forgot.
Harry: That’s all right. It’s not important really.
Brenda: But why didn’t you invite me to your party?
Harry: There was no party. No party, no phone calls, nothing.
Brenda: What a shame! I’m sorry.
Harry: There’s nothing to be sorry about. That’s life. And strangely enough, I don’t mind it. In fact, I prefer it that way.
Brenda: I’m not sure I understand you.
Harry: I mean life’s more genuine, more interesting without its conventional embellishments.
Brenda: Well, I never thought about it that way.

Explanations

Grammar

1. Czas Past Simple (przeszły w aspekcie prostym).

W pytaniach i przeczeniach posiłkowe did występuje z formą bazową czasownika głównego.

Istnieje analogia między użyciem did + forma bazowa a użyciem do/does + forma bazowa. Porównajmy:

You like music. Lubisz muzykę.
Do you like music? Czy lubisz muzykę?
You liked the concert. Podobał ci się ten koncert.
Did you like the concert? Czy podobał ci się koncert?
He likes music. On lubi muzykę.
Does he like music? Czy on lubi muzykę?
He liked the concert. Jemu podobał sie koncert.
Did he like the concert? Czy podobał mu się koncert?

Czasowniki nieregularne:
I knew him well. He understood the lecture. I knew him, but I didn’t know her. He understood her, but she didn’t understand him. “Did you know them?” – “Yes, I did. I knew them very well.”

2. Zwróćmy uwagę na konstrukcję z wyrazem there jako podmiotem pustym, wprowadzającym i podkreślającym formę osobową czasownika to be:
There’s (=There is) a letter for you. Jest list dla ciebie.
There were problems with money. Były problemy z pieniędzmi.
There are always problems with money. Z pieniędzmi zawsze są problemy.

Porównajmy również:
There are no letters for you. = There are not any letters for you. Nie ma dla cibie żadnych listów.
Are there any letters for me? – No, there aren’t (any). Czy są dla mnie jakieś listy? – Nie, nie ma żadnych.

Uwaga. no = not + any

Some (jakieś, kilka) występuje w zdaniach twierdzących, any (jakikolwiek) występuje w zdaniach pytających i przeczących, no (żaden) występuje w zdaniach przeczących.
