St. Valentine's Day falls on February 14, and is the traditional day on which lovers in certain cultures let each other know about their love.

This is commonly done by giving flowers, chocolates and Valentine's cards. It happens quite often that Valentine's cards are anonymous, which means they are not signed by the person in love. Some people pick one person and call them their "Valentine". This is done as a gestureto show love and appreciation to that person.

Most famous symbols of Valentine's Day are heart shapes, roses, and Cupid with his arrows.

The history of Valentine's day can be traced back to a Catholic Church feast day, in honor of Saint Valentine who was the martyred Christian saint. He was a bishop that married forbidden couples. They may not have been allowed to get married because the parents did not agree with the connection or because the bridegroom was a soldier or a slave. Valentine gave the married couple flowers from his garden and that's the reason why flowers play such an important role on Valentine's Day. The emperor did not like it and on February 14, 269 AD, Valentine was beheaded because of his Christian faith.

The day's associations with romantic love arrived after the High Middle Ages, during which the concept of romantic love was formulated.

The day is now most closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes in the form of "valentines.". Since the 19th century, the practice of hand writing notes has largely given way to the exchange of mass-produced greeting cards. The Greeting Card Association estimates that, world-wide, approximately one billion valentine cards are sent each year, making the day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year behind Christmas. The association also estimates that women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines.
