Wstęp - Past Perfect Continuous

Czas Past Perfect Continuous, podobnie jak Past Perfect, wyraża czynność zaprzeszłą czyli wykonywaną wcześniej niż inna czynność dokonana, będąca punktem odniesienia.

Konstrukcja

Zastosowanie:

• Czynność trwała przez dłuższy czas lub wielokrotnie się powtarzała wcześniej niż inna czynność w czasie przeszłym, o której już wspominaliśmy.
• He failed the exam because he had been spending too much time at parties.
• He had been driving for 4 hours when the accident happened.
• When I enter the class, they had already been writing a test for ten minutes.
• By that time he had already been living in Wroclaw for 4 years.
• Mowa zależna [dla zrelacjonowania Past Continuous]
• He said he had been playing football all Monday.

Uwaga!
1. Chcąc podkreślić ile razy dana czynność 'zaprzeszła' została powtórzona w danym okresie czasu lub do danej chwili w czasie przeszłym należy użyć Past Perfect, nie Past Perfect Continuous.
2. W języku angielskim niektóre czasowniki opisują wyłącznie stany i nie posiadają formy continuous. Nie można ich użyć z żadnym z czasów ciągłych. Są to między innymi: see, hear, smell, feel, taste, feel, forgive, hate, loathe, like, love, mind, wish, agree, believe, consider, doubt, expect, appear, belong, keep, matter, owe, posses, etc.
