The name Church of England refers to the territory of England. A branch of the Church of England is called the Anglican Church. The beginnings of the Church of England reached the 16th century. It was the age of reformation ( Martin Luther-Germany John Calvin Switzerland). The tendencies of reformation reached Great Britain. In 1519, Martin Luther published a list of thesis against the Catholic Church. The church was divided in Europe: North- Lutheranism; South was Catholicism. The reformation was against the rules of the Pope. Henry VIII did not accept the reformation and wrote a document in which he defended the Pope. Luther had no right to question the position of the Pope. The Pope gave him the title Fidei defensor. In 1534, Henry VIII got into a conflict with the Pope. He took several steps - dissolution of the monasteries - all riches were confiscated by the king Nowadays the Church of England is not entirely a protestant church. It is a form of compromise between the Catholicism and Protestantism - Other important pieces of information

- 39 articles- a set of 39 statements which form the main beliefs of the Church of England. They were written in 1571 and people who become priests in the Church must first formally accept these beliefs. It is a list of points which reject the catholic elements. The list included: - purgatory - celibacy - invocation of saints- only for Catholics reserved.

Administrative structure

The Church of England consists of two Provinces

a) York

b) Canterbury ( south) the oldest. It was established in the 6th century when St. Augustine christianised England. The administrative structure is overtaken from the Roman-Catholic Church

- The Church of England established its own motto " Live and let live" that's why it is also celled the Broad Church. Anglicans are subdivided- there are many groups of members which are in conflict with other groups within the Church. There are three groups of Anglicans that practice different doctrines and traditions.

a) Anglo-Catholics (High Church)- they do not recognise the Pope as the Head of the Church  

b) Evangelicans ( Low Church)- they believe in what most protestants believe

c) Theological liberals- they believe that the Church should follow changes, should be adjusted to the changing reality.

The Church of England has many branches all over the world. Besides, many groups of churches around the world, mostly in English speaking countries are closely related to the practices and beliefs of the Church of England. Every ten years there is a meeting called the Lambeth Conference between the Queen and the Heads of the Church of the branches of the Anglican Church.
